PRESS RELEASE 6/5/95
AIDS RESEARCHER FACES JAIL TERM
--------------------------------------------
Walter F. Jekot, M.D., is a Los Angeles physician and leading AIDS
treatment pioneer. He is recognized as the discoverer of an anabolic
steroid therapy which is effective in the treatment of HIV-associated
hypogonadism (hormone depletion) and wasting, the number two cause of
death in AIDS. Dr. Jekotís contribution to fighting the AIDS epidemic
is paramount.
Two years ago, Los Angeles District Judge John G. Davies sentenced Dr.
Jekot to five years in prison without parole, because he purchased
$3000 worth of a foreign anabolic steroid. These steriods were
purchased during his research stage of the treatment, at a time when he
felt the foreign steroid may be more effective in combating and
reversing these complications than the domestic versions.
The Federal Government insisted that this was a lie because anabolic
steroids could not possibly help HIV/AIDS patients. Currently,
anabolic steroid treatments in AIDS are considered by many AIDS thought
leaders to be a standard of care. This life-saving treatment Dr. Jekot
has discovered is now helping tens of thousands of HIV/AIDS patients to
maintain their lean body mass, energy, and immune system health,
thereby not only prolonging their lives, but also ensuring a higher
quality of life.
This is a severe injustice and a case of selective prosecution costing
Dr. Jekot his freedom and costing the medical/HIV/AIDS communities his
important research regarding the therapy's positive effects on the
human immune system. To allow Dr. Jekot to be imprisoned will stop one
of the true pioneers in HIV/AIDS treatment research today.
His appeal to the US Supreme Court is due for filing by July 6. He
should be allowed to remain free while he pursues his quest for
justice. Time is of the essence as Dr. Jekot must report to Judge
Davies again this June 8. Dr. Jekot needs your help in sending an
E-mail to the following political leaders, whose intervention could
help. It is not appropriate to attempt to contact the judge directly.
email President Clinton <president at whitehose.gov> and register your dismay
at this injustice.
