Help! Questions about transcriptional elements in SV40 'control' region

Thanks very much for the very helpful replies.  To put your worries at 
rest, the questions were not for a take-home final or homework :).

Anyhow, your answers were more than enough to clear up my difficulties.
I really appreciate it, it was driving me crazy.  I don't know where I 
got the weird idea that enhancers were proteins.  I saw a drawing once 
that had the control region curled back on itself with monkeys hanging 
off the 72bp repeat sequences.  It had enhancers written by it, so I 
assumed that enhancers were the monkeys.  This is starting to sound a 
little crazy.  Of course this same picture had TfIID pictured as a dog 
leaning toward a bone dangled in front of him by mice(Sp1) behind him 
with a fishing pole.  The dog was leading a blind elephant by the trunk(Pol).
Goofy, but cute.

So maybe now you see where my confusion originated.
