Need info

Hi. I am looking for info on vaccines. I have a daughter, and it is time 
to get her vaccines but I have been hearing a lot of conflicting info 
about the saftey and effectiveness of vaccines. And I have been meeting 
an inordinate amount of people who have had permanent bad reactions. (My 
wife and her best friend both developed JRA after an MMR vaccine, and my 
wife's friend was name in a large federal lawsuit against the company that 
made it.) Japan and several European countries have discontuined DPT because
of saftey concerns. Japan has developed a new, safer Whopping Cough 
vaccine.     

My first question would be: How exactly do vaccines work?

I have decided the we will get the _injectible_ polio vaccine. My daughters 
doctor has set it up, but only after telling me that I had absolutly 
nothing to be worried about concerning vaccines. Uh hu. 

Any help/info would be greatly appreciated.
