Editor seeks "Son of Hot Zone"

I'm a science writer challenged by an editor to find and write about a
little-known but colorful genius researcher on the verge of eradicating
some dramatic new infectious disease.  (As you might guess, this editor is
interested in a "Son of Hot Zone"-type thing.)  Any suggestions?
