Virazole is the tradename or brand name for ribavirin. It is
manufactured by ICN; it comes as a reconstituable powder and is
approved to administer only by aerosol for RSV (respiratory synctial
virus) by the FDA in the U.S. By the way I think it costs several
thousand dollars a dose. It is only given by aeorsol once or twice to
children with RSV and there is a lot of controversy over nwhether it
does any good.

It is administered inside a croup tent (like an old fashioned oxygen
tent) for a period of about 8 hours or so. It is usually given in the hospital
in a reverse airflow isolation room to prevent exposure of staff and
visitors to the drug. It may be harmful to women of child bearing age
or women who are pregnant or it may be dangerous to the fetus. I don't
think anybody knows for sure (probably never tested for safety on this
group of people).
