Protease inhibitors recently discovered in human saliva and reported about
a week ago in the NY Times suggests a reason why the presence of HIV may
be rare or absent in this bodily fluid. You may want to ,go back into the
NY Times files on some commercial service like AOL or Newstand to find the
original reference and researchers.  I dont think the work has been
published yet in a journal.
