You probably know this, but its my understanding they don't even understand
gradient, just concentration. Chemotaxis involves deciding whether to pick
a new random direction or keep swimming straight, not figuring out where
the source of the attractant or repellant is, except by a sort of directed
random walk. And its certainly not intelligent since supposedly they are
attracted to phenol.
