Diploid Viruses?

Previous experimental work on certain retroviruses has certainly shown that
there is a diploid genome.  Does anyone know whether the assumption that
the genome of HIV is diploid rests on experimental data obtained from HIV
preparations or is it simply assumed by analogy with previously studied
retroviruses?
