The disease is caused by a dimorfic fungus called Coccidioides immitis
which is prevalent in parts of U>S> and Mexico. It is diagnosed using
serology techniques suchas gel diffusion ,complement fixation, anew method
produced by Meridian Diagnostics,Cincinnati,Ohio called Premeir enzyme
immunoassay in microtiter plate.Detecting the organism is difficult
because it grows so slowly. It is also highly infectious and caution must
be used in isolating it from sputum.I don't think it is found anywhere
else but arid areas of U.S.such as Arizona.
