5' UTRs and translation

There are also numerous examples from cellular transcripts.
One notable 5' UTR is that of TGF beta3 (1.1 kb, and containing
11 upstream AUGs).  This is clearly a means of inhibiting
translation (see Mol. Cell. Biol. 11, 4306-4313).  In fact,
oncogenes can arise from protooncogenes through alterations
of the 5' UTR (lck for example - Nature 332, 171-173).  Hope
